Hospital screening helps identify babies who may need more testing, sometimes before symptoms appear. Bring the screening information in your discharge records to the pediatrician.
Know which results need review
New York’s newborn screening program uses a blood sample to screen for certain conditions. Newborn hearing screening is another important part of early care. Ask the hospital and pediatrician which results are available and whether anything is pending.
Keep the hospital’s contact details and instructions. Make sure the hospital and pediatrician have an accurate way to reach your family.
A screening result is not a final diagnosis
An out-of-range or incomplete result may require a repeat sample, diagnostic testing or specialist follow-up. It does not automatically mean your baby has a condition. However, follow-up can be time-sensitive, so act on the instructions promptly.
Do not assume that no phone call means every result is normal. Ask how and when results will be reviewed and whom to contact if you have not heard.
Bring the records to the first visit
- The hospital discharge summary.
- Any blood-spot screening information or request for a repeat sample.
- Hearing screening results and follow-up instructions.
- The names and contact details of any specialists involved.
A repeat hearing test or other diagnostic service may happen outside the pediatric office. Confirm where it should be done. Prepare for the first newborn visit.
Questions from parents
Does an abnormal screen mean my baby has a disease?
Not necessarily. Screening identifies a need for further evaluation. Follow the recommended repeat testing or diagnostic plan promptly.
Should I wait if the hospital requests another sample?
Follow the instructions and contact the hospital or pediatrician if timing is unclear. Some follow-up is time-sensitive.
Are newborn screening and developmental screening the same?
No. Hospital newborn screening and later developmental screening serve different purposes. Ask your pediatrician about both.
What if I do not know the hearing screening result?
Ask the hospital for the result and share it with the pediatrician. Confirm whether another screening or diagnostic appointment is needed.
Can all follow-up tests be done at Gentle Touch?
