A weight check helps put feeding and growth in context

Care and guidance for your baby

Your pediatrician reviews weight over time alongside feeding, hydration and health. Gentle Touch Pediatrics can discuss the right follow-up for your newborn or infant in Canarsie, Brooklyn.

One number does not tell the whole story

The clinician considers birth and discharge weights, the time between measurements, feeding and the physical examination. A home scale or comparison with another baby cannot replace that assessment.

Bring any recorded weights and their dates. Ask what growth pattern the clinician expects for your baby and when to return. Follow-up can differ for premature babies or babies with feeding or medical concerns.

What to tell the clinician

  • How your baby feeds and whether that has changed.
  • Whether your baby wakes and stays alert enough to feed.
  • Wet and dirty diaper patterns.
  • Vomiting, increasing yellow color or other new symptoms.
  • Any feeding or follow-up instructions from the hospital.

Agree on the next step

The clinician may recommend another weight check, a feeding assessment, additional support or further evaluation. Ask who to contact if feeding worsens before the next appointment.

Do not change formula concentration or begin supplements based only on a home weight reading. Review feeding questions with the pediatrician.

Questions from parents

When should my newborn have a weight check?

Follow the discharge team’s and pediatrician’s advice. The first-week visit includes growth review, and additional checks may be needed based on feeding and health.

Can I use a bathroom scale to decide whether my baby is growing normally?

A home reading may be inaccurate and does not provide the full clinical picture. Ask the pediatrician how weight should be measured and followed.

What records should I bring?

Bring birth and discharge weights, later measurements with dates, feeding notes and any hospital follow-up instructions.

Does slow weight gain always mean there is not enough milk?

No. A clinician needs to assess feeding, growth and other possible factors. Avoid assuming a cause without evaluation.

Should I wait for the weight appointment if feeding gets worse?

No. Contact the pediatrician promptly about poor feeding, reduced wet diapers, unusual sleepiness or a baby who seems unwell.
